Do You Suffer From Painful Feet?

Painful deformities, such as hammertoes, can be treated. Stop living with foot pain, and have beautiful feet again!

Athlete's foot, caused by the fungus Trichophyton, flourishes in warm and damp environments. This fungus, usually harmless on the skin, can rapidly multiply when feet are confined in tight, non-breathable shoes, particularly plastic ones, or when socks remain damp. It spreads through direct skin contact, as well as indirectly via contaminated surfaces, like showers, pools, towels, and bedding. Symptoms of athlete's foot infections typically include itching, stinging, and burning sensations between the toes, in addition to dry, flaky, red, and scaly skin. In advanced cases, the skin may crack, ooze, or develop blisters. Athlete’s foot, which is highly contagious, can spread to the soles and sides of the feet, or even to the hands. Anyone with a weakened immune system is at a greater risk. Prompt treatment is vital to prevent the infection from spreading and worsening. If left untreated, athlete’s foot can lead to bacterial infections derived from skin fissures. For persistent symptoms, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam and tailored treatment plans to effectively manage and eradicate the infection.

Athlete’s foot is an inconvenient condition that can be easily reduced with the proper treatment. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Ocotillo Foot and Ankle Centers.  Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Plantar heel pain in older adults is commonly caused by plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. It can become inflamed, especially due to wear and tear over the years. Other factors contributing to plantar heel pain include being overweight, which puts extra stress on the plantar fascia, and wearing shoes that lack adequate support and cushioning. As one ages, fat pad elasticity beneath the heel can also decrease, contributing to pain while walking or standing. A podiatrist, or foot doctor, might recommend exercises to stretch the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon, the use of orthotic devices to provide proper foot support, and anti-inflammatory medications as treatment. In some cases, a podiatrist may suggest more intensive treatments, like steroid injections. Wearing proper footwear that provides good arch support and cushioning can also help to alleviate symptoms and prevent further episodes of pain. If you are struggling with heel pain, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an evaluation and treatment options.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, can manifest in various parts of the body, including the feet, where early detection is vital for effective management and prevention of complications. One common sign of RA in the feet is joint stiffness, particularly in the morning or after periods of inactivity, which can make walking and movement uncomfortable. Swelling and tenderness in the affected joints, often accompanied by warmth and redness, are also indicative of RA. Deformities such as bunions, hammertoes, and claw toes may develop as the condition progresses, altering the foot's structure and causing further discomfort. Additionally, RA can lead to nodules or lumps under the skin, typically around pressure points like the heels or toes. Changes in gait or difficulty in walking due to foot pain and stiffness are further indications of RA involvement. If you are experiencing symptoms of RA that are affecting your feet, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can offer you relief and treatment strategies.

Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Ocotillo Foot and Ankle Centers. Our doctors will assist you with all of your podiatric concerns.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.

Causes of Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is primarily caused by a type of fungi called dermatophytes. The fungi thrive in warm, moist environments. Common sites of infection include public pools, showers, and locker rooms, where the fungus easily spreads from one person to another through direct contact with contaminated surfaces. The risk of developing toenail fungus increases with various factors, such as wearing tight, non-breathable shoes that trap moisture, having a minor nail or skin injury around the nail, or having a weakened immune system. Low blood circulation and slow nail growth can make people susceptible to contracting toenail fungus. Keeping the feet clean and dry, wearing breathable footwear, and using antifungal sprays or powders in shoes and socks can help reduce the chances of contracting toenail fungus. If you are suffering from toenail fungus, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist today.

If left untreated, toenail fungus may spread to other toenails, skin, or even fingernails. If you suspect you have toenail fungus it is important to seek treatment right away. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists of Ocotillo Foot and Ankle Centers. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Symptoms

  • Warped or oddly shaped nails
  • Yellowish nails
  • Loose/separated nail
  • Buildup of bits and pieces of nail fragments under the nail
  • Brittle, broken, thickened nail

Treatment

If self-care strategies and over-the-counter medications does not help your fungus, your podiatrist may give you a prescription drug instead. Even if you find relief from your toenail fungus symptoms, you may experience a repeat infection in the future.

Prevention

In order to prevent getting toenail fungus in the future, you should always make sure to wash your feet with soap and water. After washing, it is important to dry your feet thoroughly especially in between the toes. When trimming your toenails, be sure to trim straight across instead of in a rounded shape. It is crucial not to cover up discolored nails with nail polish because that will prevent your nail from being able to “breathe”.

In some cases, surgical procedure may be needed to remove the toenail fungus. Consult with your podiatrist about the best treatment options for your case of toenail fungus.
